The inauguration of this new museum was presided over by then-president of Mexico Felipe Calderon on November 1, 2012. The 4,400 square-foot museum cost about 15 million dollars to build, and it displays some 350 archaeological artifacts. The building's striking hurricane-proof design was the work of Mexican architect Alberto Garcia Lascuráin. The adjacent San Miguelito archaeological site dates back 800 years.

Lava from the volcano eventually buried the town of San Juan Parangaricutiro. Today, almost all that remains of the town is the steeple of its church poking through the solidified lava. The nearby Tarascan (Purepecha) village of Angahuan was spared by the eruption. Angahuan has a 16th-century church with unusual Moorish designs surrounding its entrance.
